“How much will braces cost?” We get this question all the time at Booth Orthodontics.
If you’re like most people, you probably consider this to be one of the most significant, or maybe even your biggest concern regarding orthodontic treatment. With multiple treatment options to choose from and customized treatment plans for every patient, you’ll need to know several different variables to get a good answer. These include:
- The type of braces you choose
- Whether the braces are for an adult or a child
- The orthodontic issues being corrected
- How long braces will be needed
- If the patient has dental insurance that covers orthodontics
- The orthodontist providing treatment
- The area in which the patient lives and will be receiving treatment
These factors all play a part in the total cost of your treatment. For example, traditional metal braces are often the least expensive options, while clear braces and Invisalign aligners treatment will probably cost more. Orthodontic treatment for kids will cost less than treatment for adults because teeth move more easily in a young mouth and the issues that need to be corrected are typically more simple. But this will still be different for each case and each patient. More complex and severe problems will always take longer and require more appointments, meaning your orthodontist will be working extra hard on your smile.
And of course, every orthodontist will have a unique pricing structure based on the market they’re operating in. Plus, insurance policies are all different, and will also depend on the patient situation and needs.

What is the average cost for braces?
Even though there is no definitive answer for how much orthodontic treatment will cost, the average cost for a child can be anywhere from $3-7K, while adult braces or aligners can run from around $5-8K. Remember the total cost of braces depends on what you need, along with everything mentioned above.
Using dental insurance to cover orthodontic treatment
Some dental insurance plans cover orthodontic treatment. However, the coverage rules and policies can be confusing. We have many years of experience working with insurance companies, and we’re committed to helping you receive the maximum coverage available to you!
We’ll base each customized treatment plan on your unique health needs and Dr. Barry Booth and Dr. Ryan Booth’s professional judgment. We won’t recommend treatment based on what’s covered by your insurance but based on what you need to meet your smile goals.
Once you’ve seen Dr. Barry Booth and Dr. Ryan Booth for a consultation and received a diagnosis and treatment plan, those with dental insurance should check with their provider to see what they will and will not cover in the way of orthodontic treatment.
As a way to better serve you, we’re happy to help with insurance claims and paperwork. Co-payments or out of pocket expenses will be estimated in advance of treatment. Once treatment is complete and all insurance payments we receive all of the necessary insurance payments, we’ll reconcile the account. You’ll be responsible for any payment that remains.
If insurance won’t cover treatment, can the cost be deducted?
If braces are medically necessary, the cost of your treatment may be tax-deductible. However, the cost has to exceed a certain amount before any deductions kick in. You should keep track of all expenses connected to your braces treatment if they wish to deduct the costs, including co-pays and check-up visits.
Will Medicaid cover the cost of braces?
Your treatment costs may be covered by Medicaid if your braces are considered medically necessary. If you want to learn more about this possibility, visit http://www.medicaid.gov/. Make sure you ask about the percentage of coverage and the lifetime maximum before starting with the treatment.
A Healthy Smile is Worth the Investment at Booth Orthodontics
Braces are about more than improving how you look. Oral health is an important part of the health of your whole body. Misaligned teeth can increase your risk for cavities, tooth decay, pain and soreness in your head and neck, as well as gum disease, and other issues. Although orthodontic treatment can be a significant investment, it’s one that can last a lifetime!
A smile is too important to make a decision based on price alone. While it’s human nature to want a good deal, when it comes to choosing an orthodontist, skill and experience are the most important factors. You’ll spend a lot of time visiting your orthodontist’s office during your treatment, so pick a practice that feels warm, welcoming, and comfortable!
At Booth Orthodontics, we strive to provide patients with a positive and stress-free orthodontic experience, from the first appointment to the last. We believe everyone should have access to high-quality, affordable orthodontic care, and work hard to provide this for you.
